The famous rental car scene was actually partly improvised by Edie McClurg, the receptionist. She originally was supposed to be having a normal conversation with a customer before tending to "Neil" but producers told her to improvise for added authenticity. When she was asked how she managed so well, McClurg told them that she just remembered situations out of her everyday life and acted them out.
