Joss Whedon, the creator of the series, wanted his protagonist "Buffy" to be a srong and tough blonde woman because he hated the cliché of 'dumb blonde', who would always die first in a horror movie.... He initially struggled to sell his story to a network, but finally found a home at the WB network.
