Fred Thompson, who actually worked as a U.S. Senator before starring in the "Law & Order" franchise. His acting career is rather on and off, but Thompson did in fact return to acting for a short while starring in the ABC series "Life on Mars" as well the movie "Alleged". He also had a short stint on "The Good Wife".
